Mountain Health & Wellness (MHW), formerly known as Superstition Mountain Mental Health Center was incorporated as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) behavioral health service agency on July 1, 1986. Initially, services were provided by a staff of four to clients in the Apache Junction area. MHW has grown significantly over the subsequent years to a staff of over 300 providing behavioral health services to over 5000 youth and adults in Pinal, Gila, Maricopa, Yuma and La Paz counties.
By 1988 there were over 100 clients being served by MHW. The following year a four-plex apartment building was leased to provide subsidized housing to SMI clients. In 2001, a new center was built in order to accommodate the growing need of services for the SMI population in the Apache Junction area. The Recovery Center now provides a comprehensive array of support services to over 500 individuals.
In 1993, Mountainside a psychiatric inpatient facility in Apache Junction opened its doors. This 14-bed secure inpatient facility provides acute stabilization for those exhibiting serious psychiatric symptoms as well as providing detox services for residents of Pinal and Gila counties. In 2009, MHW opened an inpatient psychiatric facility in Yuma. This 16 bed secure inpatient facility was brought on-line in record time and has been very well received in the Yuma area.
MHW began providing comprehensive behavioral health services in 2000 in the community of Oracle and in Kearney the following year. Through these two outpatient clinics MHW was able to begin providing services to the communities of San Manuel, Mammoth, Winkelman, Hayden and Superior. Clinics were established in 2003 in both San Manuel and Superior.
MHW broke ground in May of 2010 to build a 36,000sf integrated health care facility in the Apache Junction area. This clinic has a primary health care facility to complement our significant behavioral health care program.
